Gameplay

Elden Ring combines the methodical, challenging combat of FromSoftware's previous titles with unprecedented freedom of exploration. Players take on the role of a Tarnished, an exile returning to the Lands Between to repair the Elden Ring and become the Elden Lord. The gameplay revolves around exploration, combat, and character progression. You'll traverse the world on foot or horseback, discovering hidden dungeons, encountering mysterious NPCs, and facing deadly enemies. Combat requires careful timing, stamina management, and learning enemy patterns. You can specialize in melee combat with swords, axes, and spears; master magic with sorceries and incantations; or use stealth and ranged attacks. The game features a robust crafting system, allowing you to create useful items from materials found throughout the world. Death is a learning experience in Elden Ring - when you fall, you lose your runes (the game's currency) but can retrieve them if you return to your death location. Checkpoints called Sites of Grace allow you to level up your character, memorize spells, and fast travel between discovered locations.

Story and Setting

The Lands Between is a realm once blessed by the Elden Ring and the Erdtree, but now shattered by war following the destruction of the Elden Ring. Queen Marika the Eternal is missing, and her demigod children now fight over the shards of the Elden Ring, known as Great Runes. As a Tarnished - one of the exiles called back to the Lands Between after the Shattering - you must journey through this broken world, defeat the demigods, collect their Great Runes, and restore the Elden Ring to become the Elden Lord. The world is rich with lore and history, much of it created by George R.R. Martin, featuring complex characters, tragic stories, and deep mythology. From the golden capital of Leyndell to the cursed lands of Caelid, each region tells its own story through environmental storytelling, item descriptions, and NPC dialogues. Your choices in interacting with characters and completing quests can lead to multiple endings, each revealing different aspects of the world's fate.

World Design

The Lands Between is divided into several major regions, each with distinct environments, enemies, and challenges. Limgrave serves as the starting area with its grassy plains and forests, while Liurnia of the Lakes features magical academies and watery landscapes. The Altus Plateau presents golden fields and the capital city, while Caelid shows the horrific results of scarlet rot corruption. Mountaintops of the Giants offer frozen, treacherous terrain, and the underground regions reveal vast, hidden civilizations. Each area is meticulously designed with verticality, hidden paths, and interconnected shortcuts that reward thorough exploration.

Characters and Factions

Throughout your journey, you'll encounter memorable characters like Melina, your guide who offers leveling assistance; Ranni the Witch, who offers an alternative path; and various other Tarnished with their own ambitions. The world is populated by numerous factions including the Golden Order followers, the sorcerers of Raya Lucaria Academy, the warriors of Redmane Castle, and the mysterious inhabitants of the underground cities. Your interactions with these characters and groups can significantly impact your journey and the game's outcome.
